Tuesday, August 9th.

In Warminster, we bought some groceries which we lugged up to Betty’s place, where Anne met us and took us back out to Corton. We spent the afternoon rebuilding the rockery outside the back door, which recent rains had partly destroyed.

In the evening, I sat up late reading GM Trevelyan’s excellent English Social History, which better way than any other book that I’ve read puts the reasons for the English way into perspective.
